May 2011 AGM Pensions & Benefits Report:

This past year, the Pension and Benefits committee met 5 times during the year. Our prime focus was on developing a benefits survey to be given to staff as part of CBC's survey for upcoming contract negotiations. Your benefits package has been estimated to be worth approximately $12 000 per family and so is worth fighting for during negotiations.

Our benefits cover a wide variety of services and it's important for the negotiating team to know where we stand as a membership on specific areas of our benefits package.

The SunLife benefits booklet is online on the board website. Ask your PB rep to help you access it if you don't already have access to it. You can call or email SunLife any questions you have regarding coverage, ask your PB Rep or contact me.

As the PB officer for district 29, I am also available to provide workshops for members on various topics, as are Rosemary Judd-Archer and Keith Sled from the Executive Council. In late April, I presented a retirement seminar to a group of staff at CHSS focussing on not-yet-ready-to-retire members. Retirement takes a great deal of pre-planning, so it's never too soon to learn what to expect. If 5 or more staff members are interested in seminars on retirement, leaves, your paycheque, the pension, LTD or benefits in general, see your Rep to arrange a date.

Finally, pension valuation will be filed in 2012 and we are keeping a close eye on this, as a continued deficit will impact your pension contributions and/or future payouts. Talk to your Rep about this important issue.

Rest assured, your PB committee will keep you well informed on this issue.
